About this collection

This selection of speeches from the U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel Archives includes one campaign speech and about 175 speeches given throughout his career as a U.S. Senator. He spoke at graduation ceremonies, he gave key-note addresses for conferences, and he spoke on the senate floor and before committees.

The speeches come in a variety of formats. Some are large print for use when giving the speech and others are talking points. Some are clean copies for submission to the Congressional Record and some have edits in Hagel’s handwriting, while others have staff member’s notes.

Hagel spoke on a range of topics, from floor speeches on pending legislation and remembrances for fallen soldiers, to the need for a cleaner environment and for all nations to use clean energy, the wars, and the United States’ role in foreign policy now and in the future.

This collection of speeches represents a small portion of what is available for study in the Hagel Archives. Not included here, but available to researchers are: articles consulted for speeches, earlier drafts of speeches, event programs and schedules for the day.
