Episcopal Rooms, July 2. 1894. EDITORIAL. As in the case of many works of art it is necessary to go some distance from the canvas to see the painting in its true character and to discover beauties which are not discernable when we are closer to it, so the growth and progress of the Church in this land are not so marked when we examine the figures of consecutive years as they manifest themselves to be when we increase the range of our survey and occupy a larger field of observation. On the table before me as I write is the "Churchman's Year Book" for 1870, in which we find the statistics gathered the previous year and which give us therefore a range of a quarter of a century for comparison. Let us take one or two Dioceses at random, and mark the result. Illinois has an area of 55,410 square miles. Twenty-five years ago it had 1 Bishop and 93 other clergymen laboring within its limits, it has 4 Bishops and 163 other clergymen now. In the preceding year 750 persons were confirmed; last year the number was 1,493. This is all the ground covered by the scanty statistics then reported, we are unable to compare the numbers of parishes and communicants and the amount of contributions 25 years ago with those of last year, but what a tale do the figures above relate. The population of the state has increased 43 per cent, the confirmations 100 per cent, the clergy 80 per cent. Where is the other religious body in this land that can show such growth? Take our own State; twenty-five years ago we had 1 Bishop and 19 other clergy, now 2 Bishops and 50 other clergymen; then 31 parishes and missions with only 18 churches, now 128 parishes and missions and 70 church buildings, many of them models of beauty such as were not to be found tw enty-five years ago within its borders; twenty-five years ago we raised for all purposes $14,327, last year $85,- 000 or very nearly six times the amount; then the value of our Church property was $124,000, now in the Diocese alone to say nothing of the other two-thirds of the State $835,000, more than seven times as much. Twenty-five years ago the Church had 701 communicants in Nebraska, now she has 4,708, nearly seven times as many. The statistics of New York are defective in the book of twenty-five years ago from which I quote, much to my regret so we cannot compare the then and now in that important
